On July 16^th, Black Strobe will release EP Boogie in Zero Gravity, the third and strongest in a series of EP releases this year on Black Strobe Records.Black Strobe, a phrase which aptly calls to mind a darker envisioning of airy, superficial dance music, is spearheaded by prolific musician Arnaud Rebotini. The EP builds off Rebotini’s record as a pioneering artist in the genre of post-apocalyptic electronica, as well as his 2007 foray into blues-rock with the acclaimed LP Burn Your Own Church. Rebotini does not hesitate to blend elements of both genres on this new EP - creating an addictively groovy mix of jazzy riffs and ambient electronica beats where smoky vocals and blues guitar solos are just as prominent as the irresistible beat loops that put Black Strobe’s name on the map back in the 90’s. The EP also features four stellar remixes from nu-disco producers all over the world – listen up to a preview of Elijah Collins’ sneaky, ambient reinterpretation of “White Gospel Blues”HERE.

Last week SPIN premiered “White Gospel Blues (Museum Remix)” HEREcalling it “a steamy, sweaty basement jam streaked with rivulets of disco-funk.”

A prelude to a single release in November and a brand new full length in 2013,Boogie in Zero Gravity represents the not just the next step in the journey of an electronic legend but the birth of a new, funky and uncontrived house sound that is bound to explode upon its release into the world of EDM.

All tracks on the album were written and produced by Arnaud Rebotini.

After another blistering Independence Day here in America, leave it to the good ol' Silver Joos to shout out to our not-quite-as-free-as-we neighbors up north. You remember "Canada?" So do we, and so do David Berman, "Honkin' on" Bob Nastanovich, and little Stevie Malkmus, circa 1991. Remembering their salad days like the middle-aged mensa they claim to be, Early Times is a testament to the longevity of their unstudio sound, a carefully realized primitivity that required careful positioning of the trio in proxemity to a single tiny microphone. The loudest noise would be the one that took up the most space, so this haphazard method demanded many takes, the approved versions of which had the right combination of acceptable balance and performance magic. The end result, heard twenty-odd years later, is perfection - a place and time that still challenges, still snags the ear, still creeps out so called audiophiles when it pours forth from like the tinny little speakers of the communication device that holds their music collections. Regardless of the negative nattering of these mixed-up nuts, this is music for the ages, and we're behind it all the way. It still makes us laugh and sigh as we did when we first heard it, and frankly, the LP pressing digs out even more ambiance from these field-recordings than the original two Silver Jews EPs it collects! Early Times is here to stay, unlike its out-of-print components. On all four formats, too! Yes, each one will be placed within the Drag City time capsule, so that future generations who may not have cassette technology etc may possibly access one of the other paths.
But what does it look like, you ask? Well, the record looks great, with lots of extra innards and all that, but the guys now, they look a lot like a wrinkly version of their pre-dawn selves, the ones on view in the video below! Yeah, are those some beer'd out but pre-bearded hunks or what? Little baby Jews, acting like babies do. Joo babies that smoke and joke around with tennis rackets, is what it is. Not surprisingly, this little ditty of a commercial is comprised of footage from the early times of Silver Jews- so as to celebrate the release ofEarly Times, their new-old record, tape, CD and digital release. All makes sense now, doesn't it? Happy Independence Day from all minds who would have you think other than what your heart tells you to sing. All together now: Canadahhhahhhhahhhahhh!

News: Nude painting wins BP Portrait Award 2012...

Aleah Chapin'snude portrait of a family friend has been named the winner of this year's BPPortrait Award.
The 26-year-old American painter has won theprestigious first prize of £25,000 and a commission worth £4,000.
The portrait, called Auntie, will go on display atthe National Portrait Gallery this Thursday, 21 June.
It will be joined by 54 other entries, includingSpanish artist Ignacio Estudillo's portrait of his paternal grandfather, whichcame second.
This year's four finalists, whose work can be seen inthis gallery,were selected from 2,187 entries, received from 74 different countries.
29-year-old Jamie Routley - who is from Newport,Wales but lives in London - was the winner of this year's BP Young ArtistAward.
He submitted a triptych of portraits of Tony Lewis,who has a newspaper stand at Baron's Court Tube Station and works in a wine shop.
London-based artist Alan Coulson, whose workpreviously featured in the 2010 and 2011 exhibitions, was awarded third prizefor his painting of friend and fellow artist Richie Culver.
Director of the National Portrait Gallery, SandyNairne, said: "Aleah Chapin's portrait is ambitious and beautifullypainted, with superbly controlled colour and tone.
"She is a very deserving winner of the 2012 BPAward, which once again demonstrates the vitality of contemporary portraitpainting around the world."
Brooklyn-based Chapin has just completed a Master ofFine Arts (MFA) in painting at the New York Academy of Art, and has won severalawards including the Posey Foundation Scholarship.
Her painting is part of a series of nude portraits ofwomen Aleah has known all of her life, named The Aunties Project.
"The fact that she has known me since birth isextremely important," said Chapin. "Her body is a map of her journeythrough life. In her, I see the personification of strength through anunguarded and accepting presence."
The exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery runsuntil 23 September as part of the London 2012 Festival.

There’s always room for anotherSouthern-styled outfit that can keep it down and dirty, and when they hit thespot on Owens/Applerouth (vocals/guitar respectively) compositions such as ‘LoveNever Dies’, ‘I Won’t Take it Anymore’ and 50’s Chicago blues homage ‘Can’tPlease Your Wife’, the Grand Dukes show bags of promise. Elsewhere the materialfalls somewhat short (the Little Feat-lite ‘Cold Hard Cash’ and the lesssubstantial ‘Screaming and Crying’ for example) and there’s a suspicion thattunes that may play perfectly well in the white heat of a packed bar aren’treally fully formed enough just yet to make the grade on record; and to behonest the faithful rendition of ‘C’est La Vie’ wasn’t really necessary – it’sbeen pretty well done to death already.www.ellersoulrecords.comNeil B.
