Amanda Palmer & The Grand Theft Orchestra unleashed the new “Want It Back”music video today, offering another taste from her new album, Theatreis Evil, to be released on Palmer’s own 8ft. records on September 11.The video is a stop-motion animated video created with Australian director JimBatt, and shot in Melbourne when Palmer and her band were recording the newalbum this past spring. The video continues a strong visual art theme, incorporating her naked body as a canvas for hand-painted lyrics to unfoldacross the screen.
Body politics, and body pride, have always been a strong theme for Amanda: “I'mso comfortable being naked at this point that I almost forget… I'm also proudthat that video has nudity, but it isn’t sexual or erotic.... it's using thebody as a raw canvas, which I love.” Although a “censored version” of the videowill be made available online, Palmer hopes the video will be widely seen init’s original form, despite some nudity.
Palmer is excited to release such a stunning piece of art for her first video."I've never made a video with such a small, concentrated art-crew, and itwas magic,” she notes. “For three days straight it was just me, Jim, thetattoo-graffiti artist Curran James, and a painstaking process as we createdthe video, shot by shot by shot.” Jim Batt explains, “"Hand crafting afilm frame-by-frame is always an intense experience, even more so when you'reusing someone's body as a canvas, but there's something magical aboutstopmotion that you can't capture any other way. I'm still impressed that wemanaged to get Amanda to sit still for that long, she was a champion!"
“Jim Batt is a visionary film artist, and I hope this video shines some lighton the art-talent that's hiding out in Melbourne,” says Palmer. “That city isharboring some of the best creative minds in the world."
