Review: Chuck Leavell - Back to the Woods

To contact us Click HERE

ChuckLeavell - Back to the Woods (EvergreenArts)With a pedigree as a key (notincidental) member of the Allman Brothers Band and long-time Stones sideman itcomes as no surprise to find that ‘Back to the Woods’ showcases a craftsman atthe peak of his powers. Exquisitely restrained but hugely erudite keyboardplaying breathes new life into a well-chosen selection of blues classics, mostof which (by the likes of Memphis Slim, Skip James and especially Leroy Carr) originate in the years 1929 to 1936, giving them agenuinely contemporary feel without ever distracting from the originalcharacter of the songs.
As a pianist of internationalrenown Leavell has rarely stepped up to the mic, but his laconic lead vocals onall bar three tracks are adequate for the job in hand, giving their bestaccount on a mesmerising rendition of Charles Calhoun (via Ray Charles)’s ‘LosingHand’. Impressive guests including John Mayer, Keef and Candi Staton make validcontributions without threatening to steal the show. He may have an enviablephone book, but this is no ‘and friends’ exploitation; it’s Chuck’s gig andbetter for it.  www.chuckleavell.comwww.evergreenarts.comNeil B.

Review: Cannons North – Goodbye Dog

To contact us Click HERE

CannonsNorth – Goodbye Dog (Independent)Minneapolis has always had a healthy music scene, andsince the mid ‘80s and the rise of The Jayhawks, alt. country / Americana hasbeen one of the dominant genres in the city. Cannons North represent one of thenew generation of bands picking up steel guitars and mandolins, and with foursinger-songwriters in their ranks, they’ve got plenty to say.
So, with four out of five members contributing songsit’s hardly surprising that their debut album has appeared only a year aftertheir inception. Perhaps it’s a little more unexpected that it sounds so fullyformed. There’s a genuine group dynamic at play. Though it’s easy enough toseparate the different singers, and even their writing styles, “Goodbye Dog”hangs together extremely well. Opening cut “Cannonball Express” displays manyof the same characteristics that defined the first Wilco album, an uncomplicatedcountry-rock style, played with genuine enthusiasm and a lot of heart. “Drive”feels like a call to arms, a Cannons North theme song with an in-built love ofthe road, and the opportunity to spread the joy. The title track’s a countrytearjerker – the singer really loved that dog – and “Not The Life” providesanother moody, brooding highlight. Good songs, good singers and good musicians– be sure to check out “Goodbye Dog” and dig the new breed.www.cannonsnorth.comwww.facebook.com/Cannons-NorthRob F.

Review: Three Second Kiss – Tastyville

To contact us Click HERE

ThreeSecond Kiss – Tastyville (Africantape)For “Tastyville”, Three Second Kiss’ sixth albumsince 1996, drummer Sacha Tilotta assumes the recording / mixing role, aposition previously occupied by Shellac’s Steve Albini and Ian Burgess(producer of Shellac, Jawbox and Cows) amongst others.
Musically the Italian trio (Massimo Mosca - bass andvocals, Sergio Carlini – guitar, alongside drummer Tilotta) occupies a spacesomewhere amid post hardcore, post grunge, math rock and minimalist rock. Thebass and drums groove with a formidable, yet controlled, force that ischallenged by psychedelic and abstract guitar work. The vocals do however haveto vie for space and the gritty, tormented, hallucinatory concepts are a littleoverwhelmed.
In a nutshell “Tastyville” is muscular, irregular yettightly syncopated. Three Second Kiss play All Tomorrow’s Parties’ “TheNightmare before Christmas” (30th November – 2nd December) alongside Shellac,Wire, Mission of Burma to name but few.www.africantape.comwww.myspace.com/threesecondkiss

SiriusXM's Liquid Metal to Premiere New Bison B.C. Song Tonight

New Album Lovelessness Available October 22nd on Metal Blade Records

In the great Canadian spirit of loss and heart ache, the downer foursome known as BISON B.C.have managed to scourge their rotting brains desperately puking out new psalms of suffering. Akin to a lunatic writing their opus on the bedroom wall with their own shit comes this strange noise from the west coast melting pot of shit and failure; in a country based on terrifying distance and lonesome, stoic suffering. Lovelessness does not portray the death of love or the lack of the same. Rather it attempts to map out the pathetic and desperate pursuit of love, which in itself becomes violent like a cancer, an assault on anything that is good in the world. A heartfelt repulsion towards anything that could bring pleasure, because with happiness we suffer truly - the wanting of more. Gluttons! Pigs to the trough! Lead us to treachery! Lead us to solitude!

This evening SiriusXM's Liquid Metal will be exclusively premiering another new track fromLovelessness. Tune in to channel 40 tonight at 5pm EST and get a first listen to the song "Clozapine Dream".

Brooklyn Vegan is streaming the track "Last and First Things" HERE.

BISON B.C. worked with acclaimed producer Sanford Parker at Soma and Electrical Audio Studios in Chicago to record Lovelessness. Parker is best known for his work with bands such as Yob, Pelican, Rwake, Yakuza, Nachtmystium, Zoroaster, Unearthly Trance, and more. Needless to say, Parker is more than qualified to put-to-tape the raw, furious energy that isBISON B.C.

The first single from Lovelessness entitled "Anxiety Puke / Lovelessness" is streaming exclusively HERE. Get a first listen and be sure to pre-order your copy of the album. With Lovelessness,BISON B.C. will surely cement themselves as one of Canada's finest metal exports.

Watch: "Monad" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u9rISKHf2js

Chris Cohen is proud to share his Kate Dollenmayer-directed music video for album highlight "Monad" with you, please watch it here. Overgrown Path is currently available from Captured Tracks. Chris recently played a handful of very successful shows on the East Coast. Next, Chris takes his newly formed live band to the West Coast for select dates. After heading West, Chris Cohen goes on tour in Europe. Please scroll down to view all of the tour dates.

Chris Cohen is a 37-year-old native of Los Angeles currently residing in the farmlands of Vermont. He is the child of a former music business executive and a former Broadway actress. His resumé of prior musical projects is a long one: as a contributing member of The Curtains, Cryptacize, Deerhoof, and Natural Dreams, he released 10 full-length albums between 2002 and 2008. Along the way, Cohen was also a touring player with White Magic, Cass McCombs, Haunted Graffiti and Danielson, among others, for stints both short and long. All of this has culminated in his first release under his own name, and his first for Captured Tracks, Overgrown Path.

A singing drummer who writes psychedelic pop music, Cohen also records his own bass, Casio MT65, piano, and guitar. Tracks like "Caller No. 99" and "Monad" follow idiosyncratic forms, but are still melodic in an unconventional and homegrown way - like the best of Robert Wyatt, Mayo Thompson, Syd Barrett, and Jerry Garcia. Overgrown Path unfolds its delicate and unexpected arrangements around Cohen's relaxed baritone, unhurriedly revealing the detailed world wrapped up in each song. It's an album of sounds that will stick in your mind - If you happen to hear "Optimist High" wafting through an open window in your neighborhood this summer, you'll think you've rediscovered an old favorite.

People Get Ready shares new Arthur Russell-inspired track "Middle Name" via KCRW

STREAM: "Middle Name" - https://soundcloud.com/brassland/middle-name     STREAM: "Windy Cindy" - http://soundcloud.com/brassland/people-get-ready-windy-cindy
People Get Ready today shares "Middle Name," via KCRW.  It's the second single from the Brooklyn band's self-titled debut album due Oct. 23 on the Brassland label. Steven Reker of the band explains the track:
"'Middle Name' imagines what Joan of Arc and Nikola Tesla have in common. And the structure of the song was inspired by an Arthur Russell's 'Nobody Wants a Lonely Heart'..."

Bio: Brooklyn-based four-piece People Get Ready is Steven Reker, Luke Fasano, James Rickman, and Jen Goma. They come from all over the musical map--Reker toured as a dancer and guitarist with David Byrne and Fasano is a former member of Yeasayer.  PGR got their start in December 2009 during a run of shows at one of NY's more influential art houses, The Kitchen.  The band's distinct brand of vivid electronic pop bursts with energy, propelled by swirling and swelling harmonies, hard-to-shake melodies, ornate guitar work and high-energy rhythms set to a vocal ebb and flow led by Reker but harmonized and intensified by the entire band.  Their self-titled debut album was recorded by emerging composer/performer/producer Jherek Bischoff in the summer of 2011 at Denniston Hill, a 100+ year old farm house in upstate New York.  Bischoff  trucked two suitcases of gear to this remote location and recorded them across four rooms of the house while wrangling the spaces incredible acoustic properties.
One quality that makes People Get Ready distinct IS their unique ability to re-define what a band is -- to blur boundaries and forge continuing creative bonds with the formidable list of artists whose paths they've crossed: Robert Wilson (co-creator of Philip Glass's Einstein on the Beach), Julie Mehretu (the painter who created the cover art) and Greg Saunier (Deerhoof) just to name a few.  And with Reker's background in movement, the band invites the influences, ideas, and aesthetics of both 'contemporary dance' and 'indie music' to thrive within the same performance space - creating opportunity for a different kind of band and dance to come to light. Or, as The New York Times explains "People Get Ready is an experience beyond hearing music in a club or viewing a dance; it is a moving meditation that suggests dreams."   The band will release their debut album on Brassland October 23, 2012.

Here's what the band's founder Steven Reker has to say about this track: "Windy Cindy" was inspired by Cindy Sherman's pictures, her Untitled Film Stills. It's a livable world she's made and I got so into them, I mean really into them. The song is about my desire to take her spot in the picture, forever. I try to do it, it's fine for a bit, but I end up getting tired because I can't hold the pose as long as she can. And then I imagine myself as one of the inanimate objects -- her dress, the glass she's holding, the match that she strikes, the book she gets off the shelf. The objects are endowed perfectly by the way she handles them. It's romantic, but not in a lovey-dovey way but in the way the artwork feels...livable."

D.I.S.: Exclusive Track Premiere Brought To You By Stereokiller

The metal militia at esteemed web portal, Stereokiller, today launch the exclusive premiere of “Becoming Wrath,” from West Coast d-beat instigators, D.I.S. (Destroyed In Seconds). The tune comes off the band’s forthcoming new full-length of the same name, set to detonate on November 1 via Deep Six Records. Notes This Is Not A Scene in an early review of the record: “the album is pretty tight, dishing up a good 30 minutes of crusty d-beat obliteration. If you’re a fan of bands such as Anti CimexWolfbrigadeDisfearSkitsystem and Discharge, D.I.S.‘s Becoming Wrath definitely has something for you to lose yourself in.” Becoming Wrath was recorded and mixed mid 2012 at Architeuthis Sound in North Hollywood by the band’s own Sean Vahle and features nine tracks of malicious thrash-tinged d-beat downs that capture D.I.S. at their most venomous.
Gouge your ears to “Becoming Wrath” at THIS LOCATION.
In related news, today D.I.S. will unite with longstanding grindcore merchants PHOBIA and powerviolence miscreants STRONG INTENTION for a short run of live d-beatdowns that will include an appearance on the fourth annual New Jersey Deathfest alongside Malignancy, Deceased, Waco Jesus, Ghoul and more.

Formed in Los Angeles in 2008 by original members of Phobia, Mange and Eat the Living, D.I.S.’ esteemed musical pedigree, experience and dedication spans decades with each member bringing something diverse to the table resulting in an explosive charge of energy and innovation to an almost predictable scene and style of music. Their 2010 full-length debut, Critical Failure, which Metal Review compared to “what thrash legends D.R.I. would have produced if they were constantly injecting massive amounts of steroids into their bloodstream during recording sessions,” in an 8/10 review, quickly established the band as an unstoppable force with which to be reckoned. Song topics ranged from political indignity, religious strife to personal turmoil. The music, a crushing powerhouse of Swedish influenced D-Beat punk, mixed with ripping metal and thrash, backed by traditionally aggressive punk vocals. Following its release, the band tore up the local Los Angeles scene and West Coast before heading across the U.S. and finally to Europe, topping it off at the Obscene Extreme Festival where they systematically leveled a rabid crowd of stage divers and circle-pitting maniacs!

WATCH “ICH R U“ VIDEO HERE: http://www.youtube.com/boysnoize

On this track Boys Noize shows his funky, future-disco, robotic side or as he explains it;"Ich R U" is probably the most melodic one on my new album. If you know some of my tracks like "Yeah", "Jeffer" or "Shine Shine" ...it has that sort of vibe.“ "It surprises me that friends or fans sometimes prefer the melodic or softer stuff I do, especially on my remixes and I think "Ich R U" is obviously more of a softer one - but it's still super funky and Disco6000. Again, it has robot vocals, which I prefer to the human one, haha...“

Nightlands' Dave Hartley Announces Oak Island, out Jan. 22 on Secretly Canadian; Listen to "So Far So Long" Now

To contact us Click HERE

The son of a genetic engineer, Dave Hartley has eschewed his father's profession but decidedly inherited his analytical proclivities and love of "the lab." As Nightlands, Hartley is a scientist trying to create and understand art through analytical process. Here, with sophomore album Oak Island, his follow up to 2010's superb Forget the Mantra, new questions are explored: what happens when the human voice is layered exponentially? Is the sum more man, or more melancholy machine? In seeking these answers, Nightlands takes us on a spirit quest through lush forests down into The Uncanny Valley. Each distorted, silver-voiced melody is wrapped in the sounds of 70s AM gold - plucked acoustic guitars, trumpets, dulcimers and hand percussion. In using these pop touchstones, the songs become something close to memories, the faded feelings that tide in and out of you when conjuring the past. To this end, virtually every chord played on Oak Island is a major-7th, the most nostalgic harmonic grouping. Seals & Croft produced by mid-70s beetle-voiced Brian Eno. Crosby, HAL and Nash.
Beneath the analytics and technical experimentation lie 10 pop songs about sadness and love; this silvery robot has learned what it means to be human and paid a great cost. The elegant, lunar bossa-nova of album standout "So Far So Long," with its distant trumpeted satellite signals, offers a slow, confident lilting and wilting, as Hartley considers traversing space and time.

Hartley is a prolific sideman in many notable bands in and around Philadelphia and the extraordinary bassist of The War on Drugs (he played bass on Sharon Van Etten's epic,in Sondre Lerche's touring band, and sings in The Silver Ages). Listeners expecting a simple side project, however, will be surprised by the boldness and scope of his vision--Nightlands is the Chuck Close painting to the The War on Drugs' De Kooning.

RAC will kick off their ten day long Endless Summer Tour on November 8 in Costa Mesa, CA with three of the most sought after names in Indie Dance:Classixx, Cosmic Kids, and Jerome LOL. The four will be joining forces to co-headline a series of tour dates (presented by Red Bull Music Academy) up and down the west coast of North America this Fall.

There has been an emergence of underground dance parties where the lo-fi sounds of Indie Music has blurred the lines with the upbeat sing-along vocals of Pop.  A movement has developed around this feel good sound thanks to singles like RAC's "Hollywood", Classixx's "I'll Get You", and LOL Boys "Changes".  Songs that conjure memories of summer, they take you to a place that is nostalgic and warm.

RAC (pronounced Ar-Ay-Cee) have been reinventing the art of remixing and gathering widespread acclaim since the collective's creation in 2007.  Andre Anjos of RAC strives to maintain a style of remixing that strays from the "club mix" archetype, creating new incarnations of songs that stem from the original structure, but expand on their genre and musical arrangement.  The newest expansion of the RAC family is RAC DJs, a creative teaming of Andre Anjos and Karl Kling.  With this, RAC takes its remix theory to the booth, altering and combining tracks on the fly, to create an engaging soundscape fed by crowd energy and live interaction.

JOHN THE CONQUEROR'S NEW SELF-TITLED LP - OUT NEXT TUESDAY!

JOHN THE CONQUEROR'S TOUR DATESNov. 03 The Legendary Dobbs - Philadelphia, PA (John The Conqueror Record Release Show)Nov. 08 Broadway’s - Asheville, NC w/ Left Lane CruiserNov. 09 Jack of Hearts - Weaverville, NCNov. 16 Joe Squared Station North - Baltimore, MDNov. 17 Clementine Cafe - Harrisonburg, VANov. 19 Slim’s Downtown - Raleigh, NC[more dates to be announced soon] Power trio John the Conqueror has made a splash in Philly scene over the past year, dishing out a moving blend of blues, soul and rock n’ roll... The swaggery trio might be Philly’s answer to Gary Clark Jr. - WXPN’s THE KEY
A fine punk-blues rock record that sounds like The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion if JSBX were from the Mississippi Delta. It’s all smokestacks, greasy ball bearings, mudslides, and corn liquor swilled from mason jars; raggedly scorching guitar riffs, a thunderous rhythm section, and howled vocals. A hell of an impressive debut. - HAPPENING! MAGAZINE
The trio from Mississippi, now based in Philly, have the smoothness of classic '50s soul mixed with a southern twang. Named after an African-American mythological folk legend, of whom the likes of Dr. John, Muddy Waters, and Willie Dixon have sung, the band possesses a magical power that empowers emotion. – KNUCKLE RUMBLER
Leader Pierre Moore has a matter-of-fact singing voice, tasteful six-string skills and a tuneful writing style that balances licks & melody and avoids classic rock overload. - THE BIG TAKEOVER
They will bring you from the church to the juke joint in four quick minutes. – MADD CHICAGO
Pretty damn badass classic bluesy based guitars and real rock’n'roll. - ALAN CROSS – A JOURNAL OF MUSICAL THINGS

John The Conqueror's self-titled debut album is an amalgamation of the many sounds and styles (old and new) mined from both the North and South. Cousins Pierre Moore (vocals & guitar) and Michael Gardner (drums) are natives of Jackson, MS, while bassist Ryan Lynn hails from Philly - where the trio now call home. Together they mix a bedrock of raw deep blues with funk, soul, punk and scuzzed-up rock-n-roll into one helluva potent musical Molotov cocktail.
Perhaps what makes John The Conqueror so refreshing, however, is their honest, simple, yet extremely passionate approach to their music. Gardner and Moore (the latter who learned to play guitar in his early teens from a homeless man who slept in the back room of an auto repair shop) have been playing together in bands since their college days in Oxford, MS, although Gardner recently switched from bass to drums to make room for Lynn in the line-up in early 2011.
The ten expressive, unrestrained tracks featured on this effort are delivered with a youthful, reckless abandon as channeled through some truly old souls. And, not unlike the mythological African-American folk hero they’re named after, that should be enough to resonate with just about any generation.
John The Conqueror was produced by Pierre Moore and recorded in Philadelphia at Retrocity Studios & Jesse Gimbel's Basement.

OBELYSKKH: Full Album From German Slugesters Streaming At Stereokiller

To contact us Click HERE

As White Lightnin’, the second full-length from German quartet OBELYSKKH, nears release on Exile On Mainstream next week, today Stereokiller is hosting an exclusive stream of the entire album.
White Lightnin’ is a roaring tour de force of catchy, flowing sludge/doom with just the right amount of atmospheric properties to counter its skull-shattering low-end assault, drawing from pure filth through psychedelic soundscapes into postrock and back. The output of OBELYSKKH is crushing but it also breathes some kind of repetitive mantra-like ambition, which clears the air here and there and thus declines total negativity.
Go forth and rock the hell out to White Lightnin’ and catch up on more OBELYSKKH at Stereokiller RIGHT HERE.
Amidst tours and live performances throughout Germany and abroad since their 2008 inception, White Lightnin’ follows-up OBELYSKKH’s long-time-comin’ debutMount Nysa, which was released in 2011 via now defunct German label Droehnhaus, nearly four years after the band’s formation. Following the immediately incredible response from the doom/sludge scene it received, the band decided  against a massive gap until the next album, and over the turn of the year into 2011 set up camp with Billy Anderson (Sleep, Neurosis, Mr. Bungle, Eyehategod, High On Fire, Melvins, etc.) to capture, mix and master their new work.
White Lightnin’ will see North American release on CD, LP and digital download via Exile On Mainstream this Tuesday, October 16th.
"Obelyskkh brew up a potent cask of doom and heavy psychedelia, crafting ambience as weighted as the lumbering riffs they use to offset it." - The Obelisk
To say that Obelyskkh has great variability and ability doesn’t even do them justice. They have a chemistry that is igniting on all fronts, bass, percussion, guitars, all synced to wretch out the best possible bleak noted music they can... top shelf! 9/10" - This Is Not A Scene
"It’s the dirtiest and most ominous, yet the catchiest doom metal release of the year so far. If you’re a fan of Sleep, Neurosis, Saint Vitus, Eyehategod and the likes, this new Obelyskkh offering is a must-have, and you need to get a hold of it as soon as you possibly can. 9/10" - Metal Assault
